Assessing watermilfoil invasion effects on native macrophyte communities in North American lakes using a novel approach for macrophyte sampling

چکیده
Aquatic invasive species are among the greatest threats to freshwater biodiversity. The aim of this study was understand effects two watermilfoil ( Myriophyllum heterophyllum Michx. and spicatum L.) on native macrophyte communities assess community response a range invasion intensities as well examine influence canopy types. We hypothesized that some would be more sensitive invasion, facilitate presence. used novel approach give better representation 3D aspect which involved employing modified quadrat sample at Connecticut lakes. Results show has significant negative effect richness. Floating does not vary with intensity, but submerged does. One species, Utricularia purpurea Walter), associated high richness rarely occurred species. results identify potential disproportionally threatened by identifying indicator examination is uncommon in aquatic ecology, suggests may have resilience overall dynamics.

Response of Submerged Macrophyte Communities to External and Internal Restoration Measures in North Temperate Shallow Lakes
Submerged macrophytes play a key role in north temperate shallow lakes by stabilizing clear-water conditions. Eutrophication has resulted in macrophyte loss and shifts to turbid conditions in many lakes. Considerable efforts have been devoted to shallow lake restoration in many countries, but long-term success depends on a stable recovery of submerged macrophytes. However, recovery patterns var...
متن کاملESMI: a macrophyte index for assessing the ecological status of lakes
The paper introduces the Ecological State Macrophyte Index (ESMI), a method compliant with the Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC) for assessing the ecological status of lakes based on macrophytes. A description of the elaboration of macrophyte metrics, relevant reference conditions and a classification system for two types of high-alkalinity lowland lakes (stratified and polymictic), and a ...
متن کاملEffects of Macrophyte Vallisneria asiatica Biomasses on the Algae Community
To improve the water quality of lakes and control algae blooms, the effects of Vallisneria asiatica which is one of aquatic plants spread over Lake Taihu, with different biomasses on the water quality and algae communities were researched. The results indicated that V. asiatica could control an excess of Microcystis spp. when the V. asiatica biomass was larger than 50g in the tank with 30L solu...
متن کاملPysiological effects of NaCl on Ceratophyllum demersum L., a submerged rootless aquatic macrophyte
In the present study, effects of NaCl concentrations (0, 20, 40 and 80 mM) were investigated on Ceratophyllum demersum. Macronutrients N, P and K and micronutrients Zn and Cu were significantly decreased by NaCl salinity. In general, however, Fe and Mn contents of macrophyte tissues increased. As a result, NaCl toxicity disturbed the uptake and translocation of macro and micronutrients in the m...
